Jade (RARE locality specimen)

Item Description

An incredibly hard to find specimen of Jade from the Upper Dahl Creek Mine (formerly the Stewart Jade Mine) just north of Kobuk, Alaska. For reference, I can't find another specimen on mindat.org for comparison, so they are obviously extremely rare. The entry for this locality on thediggins.com (https://thediggings.com/mines/1695) states that the mine is closed, and there are no plan to re-open it, so it's likely that we may never seen another specimen from this remote locale ever again. This piece is a big and fairly hefty specimen of Jade (labeled as a Jade "slick"), with a mixture of attractive green, golden and brown hues, swirling throughout. The green part of the Jade is actually slightly translucent, and will pass light with backlighting. It should be noted that Jade itself is not a mineral species, but most often either Jadeite and Nephrite. The term Jade is defined in mindat.org as a "rock subtype". With that said, if you collect Jade, minerals from Alaska, or you're a fan of unique specimens from odd localities, this is something that you're not likely to find anywhere else, and you can typically only see these pieces in old comprehensive collections such a this one. From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974.
