Native iron is extremely rare in the earth's surface rocks, even though it forms the majority of the earth's core. Here we have an extremely rare mass of terrestrial native iron in rock from a remote massif in Siberia, Russia. Much native iron on the earths surface is in fact extraterrestrial in origin, meteoric, making earth-bound iron specimens like this extremely rare for collectors as well. This is a polished slice of lustrous iron in matrix. It is of course a reference specimen, not a typical thumbnail display specimen for most folks nor even a crystal, but was as close as Alex could come to adding a native elemental iron to his collection of display thumbnails.
