Item Description
Gorgeous variable iridescence on the highly luminous, sculptural mounded cluster of goethite botryoids and laminated goethite resting on hematite and limonite matrix from this old classic USA locale. Goethite iron ore was discovered here in 1732, production was sporadic until 1884, and then heavily worked until 1904 from numerous mines. Probably from the Salisbury Mine, the largest and last to close mine in the area in 1923 (MINDAT). Formerly with well-known East Coast dealers Ron Bentley and Russ Behnke. Classic and excellent old-time Ore Hill Mine material probably dating to the 1884 to 1904 heavy mining period. A Connecticut classic from the broad and important collections of Dick Hauck, founder and owner of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum.
