Iridescent Andradite garnet

Andradite garnet with this metallic, iridescent, unusual sheen to the surfaces was only found in a few discrete finds in Japan, at this location. These so-called "rainbow garnets" are today considered mineral treasures of Japan and often purchased back by Japanese collectors, as well as others. Most specimens were thumbnails. We have seen a few larger, generally clunky specimens but...this one is a good size with not only a rich coverage, but also mounded aesthetics of crystals perched atop. It is stunning in person. For some reason, the human eye sees more color and shine than a camera can capture in a photo. This is from the personal collection of longtime collector Tim Sherburn, with label. He loved garnets and had long looked for a good one of these that was not merely a thumbnail. Thumbnails can auction alone for 1000 or more. This is a superb, larger specimen with poise and impact.
