Item Description

An impressive old-time Ilvaite specimen from the Laxey Mine in Idaho, which produced some truly underrated crystals of the species. These crystals predate the specimens from the Huanggang Mine in China or even Dalnegorsk, and were truly impressive for their day. This piece hosts a predominant, fine, sharp, lustrous, jet-black, well-formed, good sized (3.0 cm), orthorhombic crystal with a pyramidal termination, surrounded by smaller Ilvaites associated with Hedenbergite and Quartz. The majority of the crystals are in very good condition, though there is a contacted area on one edge, so it's not 100% pristine. It's one of the best examples of this now seldom-seen material that we've had to offer in the auctions. Valued $2,000.
From the collection of Brian Kosnar, originally from his father Rich Kosnar.
