Item Description
Hypersthene is RARE from this well-known exotic igneous complex. Beautiful Labradorite, a pearlescent feldspar dimension stone was first found here. This is an old-time solid mass of opposing clusters of highly lustrous black to olive-green to brown stacked plates on fresh surfaces. Hypersthene is an unnecessary name for a member of Enstatite-Ferrosilite series; name discredited by the CNMMN Pyroxene Subcommittee (1988). Regarded as a synonym of Enstatite or Ferrosilite, but commonly regarded as a mid-way member between these two end-members. Most "Hypersthene" is ferroan enstatite (MINDAT). The John Trainer label, a New York financier and mineral dealer, probably dates from the 1920s until he passed away in 1953. See the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive. Comes with a Hugh Ford label dating from 1946-57. From an old East Coast collection. Not pretty to look at, but is a significant, important and RARE example of the species and locale.
