Item Description

Sharp, well-formed hydroxylherderites are RARE from the well-known pegmatite quarries at Topsham, Maine. This is a superb and pristine thumbnail pair of aesthetically intergrown well-terminated glassy and translucent crystals. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 4703 and acquired at a Sol Shale private collection sale in Autumn, 1966. A note on the back of her label states the piece was collected by Dr. Fred Pough in the 1930s (while he was in graduate school at Harvard). He later became Chairman of the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at the American Museum in New York City in 1952. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). This is an important, rare and outstanding Maine hydroxylherderite.
