Item Description
A HUGE, RARE and important grossular garnet from this obscure area of the less well-known Jacumba District of San Diego County. The impressive, sharp, highly lustrous, modified dodecahedron is gemmy to translucent and has very rich and beautiful dark cinnamon color. It GLOWS, when backlit! Grossular garnet specimens are extremely rare from any locality in the Jacumba District. The crossing at Mountain Spring was first used by American Indians and the Mountain Spring grade was first paved in 1940 as highway US 80. Interstate 8 was completed in 1963. The crystal may have been recovered during road construction or perhaps even earlier. 216 grams mass. RARE and SUPERB large grossular from the Bill Larson & his Pala International Garnet Collection - which was long on the display at the Fallbrook store, in San Diego area. Value??? We think $1000 is fair for such a unique San Diego County rarity.
