Item Description

Some of the most well-known examples of Hübnerite from any locality in the United States are the classic examples from the famous Adams Mine in Colorado. This old tungsten mine dates back to the late 1800s, and is essentially only known for its Hübnerite specimens to mineral collectors. These pieces were mined decades ago, but they are still among the best for the species from anywhere in Colorado. This small cabinet specimen features groups of beautiful, sharp, lustrous, deep reddish-brown tabular striated crystals of Hübnerite measuring up to 3.0 cm, sitting atop Quartz matrix. Please note that the largest crystals are actually on the back of the piece, not the display side. Specimens such as this are not readily available these days. For the quality, size and overall displayability, it is a fantastic display specimen of this well-known material. Originally part of the collection of Dr. Eugene Sensel.
Valued $3,500-$4,500.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 48.1.1.1 CO.3; 5201. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
