Item Description

This is a rather rich example of Hubeite from the famous Fengjiashan Mine (Daye Copper Mine) in Hubei, China (the namesake province for the species). Hubeite is a very rare calcium manganese iron silicate, and is only found in two places in the world. It was approved in 2001, so it's only bee around for just over 20 years, and it's not common to have a new rare mineral found in eye-visible crystals, in good sized display specimens. This piece features a rich coverage of dark golden-brown colored Hubeite crystals, which are associated with lovely light pinkish colored "feather"-shaped groups of Inesite on a thin layer of matrix. If you collect rarities or minerals from the type locality, don't miss out on this one, as it's very difficult to find another piece of this size that is just JAM PACKED with Hubeite crystals like this one.
From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #18150CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
