Hewettite (very rare) (ex Bob Reynolds Collection)

A very rare specimen of the calcium vanadium oxide, Hewettite from what is probably the best know locality for the species, the Gold Quarry Mine near Carlin, Nevada. The mineral was named after Donnel Foster Hewett (June 24, 1881 - February 5, 1971), who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, and is best known for his work studying the mineralogy of Mina Ragra, Cerro de Pasco, Peru. Hewett was primarily responsible for the discovery of the largest vanadium deposit in the world. This piece features attractive thin, fibrous crystals of deep reddish-brown colored Hewettite with a beautiful reflective silky/adamantine luster sitting on host rock matrix. The crystals looks beautiful up close, and are certainly distinctive and different from most other minerals, especially for a vanadium-bearing species. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
