Our friend John Cornish sweats and works hard to collect these amazing examples of zeolites from a remote locality in the Northwest USA, and only found a few great pockets of them as he worked many years : this specimen is an attractive half-pocket, with sharp upright heulandite crystals of beautiful pink salmon-flesh color perched on white fibrous Mordenite that lines the geode-like cavity. It is from the author's own collection and is a cover piece for the important reference series mineral monograph books, Collector's Guide to the Zeolite group, by Dr. Bob Lauf. Robert Lauf grew up in Chicago and attended the University of Illinois, ultimately receiving a Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering. His scientific career included over twenty years at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he conducted research on topics ranging from nuclear fuel, coal by-products, materials synthesis, microwave processing, sensors, optical materials, and biomineralization.
