Item Description
An outstanding and very aesthetic, old-time hessite specimen from this historic gold mining district. Two striking clusters of sharp crystals with different, fine form are set on either end of the quartz crystal "deck" on the the beautifully shipshape matrix. Hessites from Botes are undoubtably the world's finest and this is a good one. Not the richest or biggest, but it has sharp crystals, well spaced on appealing matirx. This mid-1800's-era piece has a fine provenance, as it was formerly in the Carl Bosch (1874-1940) and Smithsonian Collections. The black and gold label is from the PRIVATE display collection of Dr. Bosch and only a few such items ever left the Smithsonian via exchanges since the donation. These black leather labels, etched with mineral information, are highly prized among collectors of such ephemera. Ex Jack Parnau and Bob Trimingham Collections. Valued at $2500.
