Item Description
A 28 gram sculptural sawed and polished fragment from the Henbury meteorite. The Henbury meteorite comprises many fragments of an asteriod that impacted an area in Northern Australia about 4200 years ago. The craters (13 to 14 small ones) were discovered in 1899, but were not investigated until 1930. The area is now the Henbury Meteorites Conservation Preserve. It is classified as a nickel-iron meteorite with a medium octahedrite structure and has a fusion crust. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 4856 and acquired from the Sol Shale Collection in 1966. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Specimens from the fall typically sell for $4-10/gram.
