Item Description
The Franklin Mining District is one of the great mineralogical localities on earth, as it has yielded hundreds of individual mineral species, though a good number of them are typically microscopic or not well-crystallized. With that said, Sterling Hill has produced some very attractive display specimens of Hemimorphite, with good sized, eye-visible crystals. This piece is a classic example of said material featuring radiating clusters of tightly intergrown white / colorless Hemimorphite on tan-brown matrix. A few nicks and bruises can be seen, but it is still a very good representation of this classic old material. Please note that for a time, this species was actually known as "Calamine", which you can see on the label attached to the back of the specimen. From the collection of Richard ("Dick") Philip Hauck formerly of Bloomfield, New Jersey and now a resident of Franklin, New Jersey. Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
