Hemimorphite

Item Description

An attractive older specimen from Santa Eulalia, Mexico featuring good sized, prismatic bladed crystals of Hemimorphite measuring up to 1.8 cm long, which are coated by dark brown iron oxide, sitting on a thin layer of Limonite matrix. Despite the iron oxide coating, some of the Hemimorphite crystals actually show a decent amount of luster on the prism faces, and are slightly gemmy in areas where they weren't completely coated. The most significant aspect of the piece is the fact that these are not only bigger than average Hemimorphite crystals for the locality, but they are isolated and free-standing, which is rare for Santa Eulalia, as they are often intergrown into crystal groups/clusters, and individual crystals are hard to find. This is certainly older material, probably from the 1960s-1970s era, and just beautiful in person. A special and eye-catching example that would make a fine addition to any Mexican suite or a collection of specifically Santa Eulalia minerals. From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#60 Mx), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel.
