Hematite with Rutile on Aragonite (unusual combination!)

Cavradi gorge hematite specimens are among the most desired alpine mineral specimens, with exceptional examples commanding huge sums. This specimen features a large hematite crystal (3.3cm wide) with numerous, blood-red rutile crystals on its surface nicely positioned in matrix. The association is classic, and the hematite is right out of the old books for what they should look like. What is highly unusual, however, is the matrix of Aragonite! Normally, the matrix is ugly granite rock, or perhaps a quartz matrix. This is the first piece we have seen with hematite on an aragonite spray. The metallic hematite and rutiles contrast strongly with a bold, rice-colored matrix spray in geometry, as well as color. The piece has multiple possible display orientations. Great example of this classic material! From the Ed Ruggiero Collection, acquired by him in the 1970s. We bought his collection 15 years ago and this got lost in need of a long cleaning, and packed away until now. Valued $1000-1250
