Item Description
Fantasy-like, sculptural, colorful and rare small cabinet specimen from the obscure Iron Hill Mining District northwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico. A strikingly sculptural 360-degree cluster of stacked botryoidal hematite stalactites are dramatically colored by multi-hued iron oxides varying from yellow-brown to rust-red. We showed this piece to our resident mineralogist, Dr. Tom Campbell, who believes the botryoidal stalactites are hematite coated with iron oxides. Ex. Bruce Carter Collection, a well-known West Coast geologist, collector and Board Member of the Rice Museum of Rocks & Minerals near Portland, Oregon. A remarkable specimen from the locality and rarely on the market today.
