Item Description

An old time piece of Wisconsin and the Midwest mineral history! This is a botryoidal hematite and goethite from the Montreal Mine, Wisconsin, USA. It was an iron mine that first opened in 1882 and at its peak, employed over 400 workers and extended to a depth of 4518 feet into the Ironwood Formation. It was the best producer of iron ore on the western side of the Gogebic Iron Range in the Lake Superior district. The last ore was shipped away in 1963 and the mine closed. These Midwestern hematites pop up every so often but not nearly as much as the English hematites they compare to. Don't miss out on this classic specimen! Ex. Alex Venzke.
