Hematite with epitaxial Rutile (classic Alpine)

One of the most iconic combinations seen in European Alpine minerals (and the mineral world in generals) are the classic Hematite / Rutile combinations from the world-classic locality at the Cavradischlucht (Cavradi Gorge) in the Alps of Switzerland. You will not find better or more eye-catching examples of these two minerals together from anywhere else in the world. When they're great, they're simply breathtaking. This miniature specimen features fine quality, highly lustrous (splendent), silvery-grey metallic bladed crystals of hexagonal Hematite which have an epitaxial overgrowth of glowing blood red Rutile prisms. A small amount of off-white colored Adularia (low-temperature Orthoclase) can be seen on the base of a piece for a nice touch. This combination is unmistakable, and truly one of the most beautiful associations in the mineral world in my mind. Both the front and back of the piece feature Rutile crystals, and they show an intense color when backlit. The only damage is on the base of the piece where it was removed from the pocket wall, otherwise it's in excellent shape. These pieces are seldom seen on the market, and any good worldwide mineral collection is not complete without one of these beauties.
