Item Description

Here we have a wonderful example of "Martite", which is a variety of Hematite defined as pseudomorphs after Magnetite, that form due to the fleeing of oxygen, as Magnetite has one more oxygen ion than Hematite. Some of the best known examples of "Martite" are those from various localities in Utah, especially the Twin Peaks Prospect. This piece is an excellent display specimen featuring a full coverage of sharp, well-formed octahedral crystals measuring up to 1.1 cm across, showing a "rusty" oxidized appearance on the surface, with a deep brownish-black metallic hue underneath. A good percentage of the crystals are undamaged, though there are some contacted areas, so the piece is not 100% pristine.
