Item Description

Exceptional, RARE style, old-time hematite from the historic iron mines of Cleator Moor. Specimens from Cleator Moor are rare compared to other adjacent famous areas of the West Cumberland Iron Field, such as Egremont and Frizington. Most specimens from the area are classic botryoidal hematite "kidney ore". Hematite "needle ore" specimens are a rare and desirable varietal from the famous old iron mines of Cumbria. This rare and unusual stout, 3-dimensional 360-degree piece looks like an archaic monolith. The sculptural elongated curved fibers on the numerous faces have shimmering chatoyant lustre and are gray-brown to rich brick-red. The top is partially terminated and contacted. The piece displays well without aid, as the base has been sawed. RARE, fascinating style older and attractive 360-degree hematite from the R.D. Mushlitz Collection. Every turn presents a distinctively different aspect to the piece.
