Item Description

I have to stress that this specimen was not terribly easy to photograph, so it was difficult to convey the quality and attractive crystallization, but take my word for it, the piece truly looks much better in person. This is only the second specimen of this material that we have had to offer. The piece comes from the collection of renowned mineral dealer Richard Kosnar (the namesake for the phosphate species Kosnarite) who purchased the specimen in 1999 for his celebrated Alpine & "Alpine-type" collection. It is a gorgeous small cabinet display specimen comprising large, sharp, HIGHLY lustrous, metallic / splendent, dark silvery blades of Hematite in parallel growth. The piece has a contact on the bottom where it was removed from the pocket, but displays very well as you can see. It is not like your typical Swiss Hematites neither in size nor style. It is unique, and unlike anything we've seen, save one other specimen. Overall it's a really cool "Alpine-type" Hematite, and would make a great addition to any worldwide Hematite collection or a suite of Russian minerals. The three-dimensionality of the specimen does not show through in the photos, but please know that this is a unique and very hard to find specimen, especially now since nothing is coming out of Russia anymore. For reference, the specific locality information on the label states the piece is from "Pyrtyndyrma, (Pyrtindyrma), (purportedly from the Peda mine - an "Alpine cleft" deposit) approx. 25 km south/southwest of Puiva, 30 km south/southwest of Dodo, 27 km due south of Neroika Mt., and approx. 65 km west/southwest of the Village of Saranpaul, Subpolar Ural Mts., Tyumen Oblast, Russia".
