Item Description
An attractive full cabinet-sized display specimen from an oddball locality. The piece was formerly in the collection of Dr. James Cole, who personally collected it in April of 1994. The given locality is the portal area of an old mine near the Parker Dam in Mohave County (right on the California border). While there are many localities where Hematite has been reported in Mohave County, I've never seen anything quite like this piece. A rich coverage of brilliantly lustrous, dark grey-black metallic Hematite micro crystals completely cover the display side of the underlying matrix. Upon close inspection, the crystals are thin and platy in their habit, and have formed somewhat "rose"-shaped groups. The piece is highly displayable and looks beautiful on the shelf in a case. If you collect Hematite or minerals of Arizona, this is an interesting esoteric specimen that obviously came from an isolated find, and you're not likely to find another like it anywhere else. It's exactly the kind of specimen you would expect to find in a deep comprehensive collection like George's.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 4412 AZ.2; 2080. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
