Hematite (rare Chinese locality)

Item Description

A rarely seen Hematite specimen from Xichang County, Sichuan, China featuring very fine quality, razor-sharp, highly lustrous (splendent), dark grey metallic blades measuring up to 8 mm, sitting on minor matrix. The crystals are beautifully intergrown, creating groups that closely resemble "roses", but they're not quite full "roses". The majority of the crystals are undamaged, though there is a bit of peripheral roughness. These are very hard to find on the market, mostly because they were mined 15 years ago, but very few were found. This is certainly one of the best pieces we've had to offer in the auctions, and if you collect Hematite or Chinese minerals, don't miss out on this one, as we don't have another, and it's really good for what it is.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#56 C), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel.
