Hematite (''Rainbow Hematite'')

Item Description

A large, attractive and classic piece of the so-called "Rainbow" Hematite from the Andrade Mine in Brazil. After doing a bit of research, it seems that the iridescent flashes of color are not caused by oxidation, but rather micro phosphates or possibly aluminum which have been deposited on the surface in a thin layer. A sparkling coverage of blues, greens, pinks, yellow and golden flashes can be seen when the piece is rotated in the light. Difficult to illustrate in the video, better in person. A really eye-catching big specimen of this rarely seen material.
From the collection of the beloved mineral dealer and collector Rock H. Currier (1940-2015) who was the long-time owner of Jewel Tunnel Imports (named after the large open vugs in basalt in India which were often filled with crystals). Rock travelled the world in search of mineral specimens, and built and impressive collection over his lifetime. He was one of the more colorful and unforgettable figures in the mineral world.
