Item Description
The wide number of pegmatite localities found in Park and Teller Counties, Colorado are the source for some of the world's finest Amazonite specimens. Along with other minerals like Smoky Quartz and Fluorite, these pegmatites have also produced some of the most well-known and finest quality pseudomorphs of Hematite after Siderite. This piece is a fantastic example of said material featuring a rich coverage of very sharp, well-formed rhombic crystals of what were once Siderite that have been replaced by metallic silvery-black Hematite sitting on a slightly concave shaped group of beige colored Microcline matrix (which is actually crystallized on the underside). There's a notably flattened Smoky Quartz crystal that can be seen lying beneath some the Hematite pseudomorphs for a nice touch. The largest pseudomorph measures 1.7 cm. Nearly every crystal is pristine, even the few that are actually hanging off the side of the piece. A superb, top quality example of this distinctive, classic material from Colorado. This specimen was collected by George Fisher and Dough Collyre in 1997 on the PA Claim (which was named after George's wife Phyllis Ann). George Fisher liked the piece so much that it became part of his collection, and later was purchased by Roy Smith for his collection until George Loud acquired it in April of 2001. I know this might look like a "black rock", but knowledgeable and experienced Colorado collectors will tell you how good it is, especially for the size.
Valued $2,500-$3,000
Ex George Loud Collection No. 4412 CO.1; 5212. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
