Hematite pseudomorph after Magnetite

Pseudomorphs are one of the more intriguing and certainly popular subcategories for mineral collector. They are such a unique occurrence in nature, as it takes such specific conditions for them for form. Some of the most distinctive and fine quality pseudomorphs in the world are the beautiful examples of Hematite after Magnetite from the Payun Volcano locality, which lies just outside of Patagonia in southern Argentina. These gorgeous specimens have been coming out sporadically over the last 20 years or so. I never get tired of seeing them as they continue to surprise us with the gorgeous forms and geometric shapes. The Hematite has replaced the stunning sculptural form of the original octahedral Magnetite crystals, showing both euhedral faces and deep skeletal forms, to create this desirable and beautiful pseudomorph. This eye-catching specimen has good luster in areas, impressive, razor-sharp, faces and a beautiful metallic silvery-grey hue on the surface. No major damage that I can find. Priced at $2,500 in our inventory. This piece is from the collection of Dr. Edward ("Ed") David Jr. of Bedminster, New Jersey (1925-2017). Catalogue No. 31 N. Ed among other things, had a doctorate in electrical engineering from MIT, and served from 1970-1973 as the science advisor to President Richard M. Nixon, but he's best known in the mineral world for assembling one of the best private mineral collections in the latter half of the 20th century.
