Hematite pseudomorph after Magnetite

Here we have a beautiful example of these classic specimen from the Payun Volcano locality, just outside of Patagonia in southern Argentina. This locality is famous for producing these remarkable pseudomorphs of Hematite after Magnetite with distinctive and beautiful geometric forms. Sporadically, over the last 20 years or so, these unique specimens have trickled out of this area and continue to delight us with the gorgeous shapes and configurations. The Hematite has replaced the stunning sculptural figure of the original octahedral Magnetite crystals which range from robust textbook crystals, to highly "hoppered" / skeletal examples all the way to slender elongated forms. The largest crystal measures 2.6 cm long. This eye-catching specimen has good luster with impressive sharp, faces and a beautiful metallic silvery-grey hue on the surface. It is complete-all-around, and nearly a "floater", were it not for a small amount of matrix on the back. Priced in the inventory at $1,500.
