Item Description
Considered to be among the great, classic European localities, the iron mines of Elba date all the way back to Etruscan times, and the Hematites from here can be among the most unique and distinctive in the world. This excellent specimen is comprised of highly modified crystals up to 1.6 cm, with good luster and smooth to striated faces. The black to gunmetal-grey color is attractive, but the real star of the show is the brilliant, multi-hued iridescence, which takes the choice crystals to a whole new level. This is a fine, aesthetic representation of the species from this locality. Formerly on the collections of Paul Ney, J. Weber, and Richard A. Blackman. ex George Elling Collection.
