Item Description

Hematite "needle ore" is a bizarre growth of nature, these strange hematite formations come from just a few of the world's many iron mining districts. This dramatic, very large elongated, lustrous, rusty brown splintery looking column of hematite needles originates from the historic iron mines on the Marquette Iron Range in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Today, such specimens are quite rare from any locality. Obviously, as the main ore they were working, most were simply smelted. Specimens like this were often kept by miners as souvenirs for their interesting shape. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 7835 and acquired from the Cisneros' in October, 1975. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien-Welt" November-December 2017). This is a RARE large survivor from Michigan. valued $1000-1250
