Item Description

Calcite is VERY RARE from the famed New Cornelia open pit copper mine at Ajo. The MINDAT Photo Gallery for the locale features only two specimens! Striking large hematite-included dogtooth scalenohedrons, to 5.8 cm, compose this impressive large jackstraw specimen. The periphery wear shows some damage at edgesm and inside you can see that the crystals are glassy, translucent and light tan in color. The interior is nearly pristine, with only a few gently bruised crystals. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 298 and acquired from The Bradley's in the 1950s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien-Welt" November-December 2017). An imposing, rich and RARE large old-time 360-degree calcite from Ajo.
