Item Description
A classic, old-time, showy, large two-sided mounded hematite-included amethyst specimen from the famous Thunder Bay District of Ontario. Most of the crystals on the "front" have very highly glassy lustre, with most of the crystals on the "back" having more matte lustre. A 3.4 cm crystal on the left dominates the front, while an impressive large 4.4 cm crystals dominates the back. The scattered bruising reveals the underlying rich purple amethyst. Ex Al Kidwell Collection of Houston and acquired from the Royal Ontario Museum in 1960. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist for Exxon. He passed away in 2008. The Phosphate Kidwellite is named for him. See the 1982 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 13, No. 2. Highly representative old-time material from Thunder Bay.
