Item Description
Hematite "feathers" are very rare from any of the numerous iron mines of Iron County and this is an exceptionally stout small cabinet example. This sculptural, ribbed hematite has bright metallic luster to add to the rich mahogany-brown color. This fine piece has a RARE brilliant termination, as most have contacted ends. The Hiawatha No. 1 began operations in 1893 and the mines in the Group operated in part until 1967. Specimens are, in general, very uncommon from the Hiawatha Group and "feathers", such as this are truly RARE. One rarely sees these so well preserved with a sharp termination.
