Item Description

Large, stout, pseudohexagonal, prismatic crystals of Hematite dominate this cluster from the classic Brazilian locality at Itabira. At least six large Hematite crystals between 1 and 2.5 cm in size comprise the piece along with several smaller crystal around the base that are complemented by one terminated and one incomplete Quartz crystal. The Hematite crystals exhibit a stacked, almost poker chip-like appearance, along their sides from the deep striations probably resulting from parallel growth of numerous platy crystals. The cluster also has an slight iridescent sheen to it for added effect and aesthetics that is unusual for the locality. These Hematites are quite large for the locality and are in good condition with some edge wear and minor contacting on the backside. From the diverse and historic collection of one of the great field collectors and mineralogists of mid-1900s Texas, Albert Kidwell of Houston (1919-2008), after whom the mineral Kidwellite is named. Purchased in 1962 from Larry Conkin. REALLY UNUSUAL specimen!
