Item Description

The Hematite specimens from the historic Montreal Mine in Wisconsin are some of the most distinctive and frankly beautiful examples of the species from any mine you'll see. The range from botryoidal to lath-like to unique "needle"-like groups that can almost resemble something organic. This famous locality started production in the 1886, and the final ore shipped in 1963 (mindat.org), so you know that this piece is a minimum of 60 years old, and could date back well over a century. This eye-catching display specimen featuring a beautiful 6.5 cm "fan"-shaped group comprised of almost chatoyant radiating thin prismatic crystals of Hematite, along with a few additional sculptural Hematite groups, sitting on a matrix of Calcite with Goethite. A really striking and eye-catching specimen, and it's not terribly common to find this particular style of Hematite on matrix from this mine in my experience. The piece originally came from Joe Dague by way to Lance Hempel.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 4412 WI.1; 9526 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
