Item Description
Splendent metallic jet-black, sharp, tapered blocky hematite crystals are aesthetically set on the mounded matrix on this classic and excellent small cabinet from the ancient and famous iron mines on Elba Island. This is a classic form of Elba hematites and the crystals reach 2.2 cm. The crystals in the interior are in fine shape, with only one bruised crystal. The noted periphery wear is certainly acceptable in the context of this showy specimen. Elba has produced some of the finest hematites in the world and this is an excellent example. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 9340 and acquired from Harvey Gordon in September, 1981. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
