Item Description

Considered to be among the great, classic European localities, the iron mines of Elba date all the way back to Etruscan times. Hematites from Elba can be among the most unique and distinctive in the world. This excellent specimen is comprised of tabular, highly modified crystals that are stacked like poker chips. The black to gunmetal-grey color is attractive, and there is some golden iridescence along the edges. This is a fine, aesthetic representation of the species from this locality. Originally obtained from Herbert Maucher, whose labels date back to 1936. From the large worldwide collection of historical minerals, of George Elling of New Jersey.
