Item Description

A very rare specimen from the famed Cavnic (formerly Kapnik) mining area in Romania featuring small lemon yellow crystalline grains of Helvine sitting on a matrix composed of with massive pink Rhodonite and white Quartz. For reference, the few other pieces I've seen from this locality state that the pink mineral is Rhodochrosite, but I think in this case, it's actually Rhodonite, so it makes it even rarer, as it's the only one I can find with Helvine and Rhodonite together on the same specimen. For reference, there is a specimen listed on mindat.org that states this material is a mixture of both Rhodonite and Rhodocroshite (see https://www.mindat.org/photo-531244.html). It's a reference piece to be sure, but it's virtually impossible to find another one on the market, so if you've ever wanted a specimen of Helvine from this classic locality, now is your chance.
From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #15583L, and the catalogue entry for the piece states that it was exported from China and imported into the United States by The Rocksmiths, and was purchased by Chet on February 8, 2001 (TGMS Show). Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
