Item Description

Hedyphane is a relatively rare calcium-lead chloroarsenate and this is a very good small cabinet example of the species from Tsumeb. This specimen consists of lustrous, sparkling, grayish-tan, hexagonal, 1 to 2.5 mm, prismatic crystals of Hedyphane with pyramidal terminations densely sprinkled on most of the display surface. Many of the Hedyphane crystals are hollow suggesting they grew on an earlier formed mineral which was dissolved and left the cast of Hedyphane. Hedyphane is often mis-identified as mimetite. The mineral is deposited on a porous matrix that appears to be a very fine latticework of gray Cerussite. Ex Gebhard collection (Georg Gebhard wrote the famous Tsumeb books in German).
