Hedenbergite (Hefendehl Coll.)

We rarely see good crystals of Hedenbergite available as it's usually a rock-forming mineral and distinct crystals aren't that common. This is a great cluster of sharply formed, blocky crystals of the mineral from Morocco, not somewhere you would expect to find good crystals of Hedenbergite either! In fact, Mindat only has four specimen photos from Morocco and none of them are even close to this quality! These crystals are robust, dark olive green with a mixed satin to slightly adamantine luster and are between 1 and 3.2 cm in maximum dimension. The crystals are discrete and the biggest one is prominent and just off center. There is a soft, off-white, clay-like material in the interstices between the crystals that serves to highlight them with the contrast in colors. A really good cluster of this Pyroxene Group mineral!
