Item Description

Sharp octahedral crystals to 6mm, stand out on matrix, on this unusual specimen of the rare mineral hauerite. It is a display example, not merely reference, with two sharp crystals atop. We have seen hauerite from other locations, more commonly from old finds (1800s vintage) in Italy. In looking up information on this particular locality, much to our surprise, we found it to be the type locality of the species - per Wikipedia: It was discovered in Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Kalinka sulfur deposit near Detva in what is now Slovakia in 1846 and named after the Austrian geologists, Joseph Ritter von Hauer (1778–1863) and Franz Ritter von Hauer (1822–1899) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauerite)
