Harmotome on Calcite (ex George Fletcher Collection)

Harmotome is an uncommon zeolite species, rarely found in showy and attractive display specimens such as this. This particular piece is a fantastic example of the very hard to find combination of stark white Harmotome on rich golden-brown / root beer colored Calcite crystals. The contrast between the two species is fantastic. The color of the Calcites (on the upper portions of the crystals) is quite similar to the Fluorites from Clay Center, Ohio, but they notably COLORLESS underneath. If you look at the UV photo, you can see the areas of colorless Fluorite glow a rich pink hue, but the golden-brown areas have a much more muted fluorescence. You can clearly see the Harmotome crystals are not only incredibly sharp and well-formed, showing textbook blocky monoclinic crystal habits, but they are highly lustrous with an almost porcelain-esque appearance on the surface. The largest Harmotome measures 6 mm and the largest Calcite measures 1.3 cm. There is a bit of peripheral roughness where the piece was removed from the pocket wall, but this is one of the best examples of this material that we've ever had to offer, and you would be hard-pressed to find another of equal size and quality on the market today. This specimen comes with a label from the collection of George W. Fletcher (No. 4112) who personally collected the piece on September 17, 1992, and the piece came to us from the collection of Richard Rossi.
