Item Description
Hanksite has been known since 1880s, and was named after Henry G. Hanks in recognition of his service as the first man in California to serve as the state mineralogist. Here we have a large and impressive doubly-terminated hexagonal Hanksite crystal from the type locality, Searles Lake in California. The crystal is notably sharp and well-formed for its size, along with being GEMMY when backlit. Like nearly all Hanksite crystals from this locality, it has the typical matte luster and a soft golden internal color. It's complete all around, although it does have a bit of interrupted growth on the underside. This is one of the largest single Hanksite crystals that we've had to offer, and is a superb example of this well-known sulfate species. Priced at $1,800 in the inventory. PLEASE NOTE: these crystals can sometimes be coated with mineral oil to preserve them from dehydration in humid environments, as they will dissolve when exposed to water or damp air. It is best to keep them in a cool, dry environment.
