Item Description
Hambergite is a rare beryllium borate found in alkali-rich pegmatites. Matrix hambergites are for some reason rare and for that matter good sharp crystals are pretty rare on a worldwide basis in and of itself. Afghanistan has recently produced some of the best yet known, for the species. The association with pink and green gem tourmalines is extremely rare. This outstanding combination specimen is capped by a striking, 2.5 x 1.5 x 1.3 cm crystal of hambergite, sharply twinned and with sharp faces and edges as opposed to the usual etched faces we often see. Both the sharpness and the twinning are extremely uncommon, even from this productive locale. The mounded cloud of hackly albite hosts numerous other hambergites, some quite glassy and most partially covered by albite. The gemmy tourmalines scattered about are a superb and colorful compliment. The vertical tourmaline is 1.3 cm and the largest is 2.0 cm. Even the base is striking, as it is shot through with pink tourmalines! Outstanding and rare combination material from this noted locale from the Herb Obodda dealer stock. Herb valued this piece at $500, five or more years ago.
