Item Description

A rarely seen specimen of Gypsum that was labeled only as coming from the "New Street quarry", so I can't say for certain if it's from the Upper or Lower Quarry. If I had to guess, it's probably from Upper New Street, and if anybody can say for certain, please let us know, so we can update the listing. The piece features a 5.2 cm long group of translucent, colorless Gypsum sitting on a matrix composed of "casts" of Quartz replacing Anhydrite, which is a rarely seen combo from either Upper or Lower New Street. The Gypsum group features a combination of smooth crystal faces and matte etched faces creating a unique appearance. If you collect minerals from trap rock localities, or if you're a fan of Gypsum, don't pass this one up, as few were ever found. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #1009CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
