Item Description
Please note, the given locality for this specimen ( Fujikaramari, Date-gun, Fukushima-ken, Japan) seems to be a bit outdated, but I believe it's from the Fujigatani Mine, Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. I did find a reference to "Fujikaramari" in a 1960 article in the Proceedings of the Japan Academy (see https://www.mindat.org/reference.php?id=13419234), which specifically talks about the Garnets from the locality. Nonetheless, specimens from Fujigatani are exceedingly rare on the market, and this piece is the only one we've ever had to offer. It features a dark reddish-brown, 2.3 cm, dodecahedral crystal of Grossular associated with partial crystal of dark green Vesuvianite measuring 3.1 cm, with massive white Calcite on matrix. The piece is not without some damage / incomplete growth, but still a cool esoteric locality piece for any fan of Japanese minerals or worldwide Garnets. The piece was part of the collection of Robert ("Bob") Jenkins, a retired PhD geologist who had worked for Conoco and DuPont, along with the Homestake Mine, and other locations according to George's 3x5 card that accompanies the piece.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 9150; 51.4.3b.2 JA.1. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
