Item Description

A fantastic and incredibly hard to find cabinet sized display specimen of Grossular from the famed San Martín Mine in Mexico. This is the first specimen that I can recall having to offer in the auctions from this locality, and it's a choice example to be sure. Dozens of wonderful, lustrous golden-brown colored crystals of Grossular showing dodecahedral faces with minor trapezohedral modifications measuring up to 1.0 cm across, are associated with minor gemmy colorless Quartz along with bladed white Baryte, plus black Sphalerite and brassy Chalcopyrite (which seems to be epitaxially overgrowing a Sphalerite crystal). Most of the Grossulars are undamaged and they look beautiful when you hold the piece in your hands. A truly impressive and fine quality example of this highly elusive material. A great piece for any fan of worldwide Garnets, minerals of Mexico or specifically a collector of pieces from the San Martín Mine. Valued $1,500.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#2 MX), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection through our various platforms.
