Item Description

Fine grossular garnet specimens are RARE from this well-known old extinct New Mexico Au-Ag-Cu-sulfide mine. Two sharp crystals are aesthetically set with a few quartz needles in the 4.5 cm vug in the sculptural small cabinet matrix. The sharp and lustrous modified dodecahedrons are 1.5 cm and 8 mm. The crystals appear to be mottled-brown with striated faces in normal light. Bright light reveals translucent yellow-orange color. The vug is lined with tiny garnets and the matrix is very garnet rich. Spanish discovered the San Pedro Mine in the mid to late 1700s and worked it for gold. The mine has produced outstanding gold specimens, among numerous other species, and intermittently produced until the 1980s. A RARE, extremely fine and aesthetic grossular garnet from the locale and the Gary Weaver Collection. It displays very well without aid. A must for the locality or species collector.
