Item Description

A very rich, showy and uncommon combination from this well-known Italian locale. Two generations of grossular garnets cover this piece: tiny, sparkly, translucent, orange-red hessonite crystals; and large complex clusters of lustrous, reddish-black crystals. The clusters may be hibschite, a variety of grossular with part of the orthosilicate ions replaced by hydroxide ions. Nifty accessories include grayish-green clinochlore books and uncommon tan to brown titanite crystals to 1.3 cm. The matrix is nearly all grossular. Probably older material, but no proof. Ex Bob Trimingham Collection. This fine and rare combination displays well without aid from both directions.
